Remembering Cal and Andy

The weather cooperated today as golfers at the Amaruk played the Heart and Stroke memorial tournament in memory of Cal and Andy ... golfing buddies of many of the particapants. Three of Andy's brothers made the trip from 'the Crossing' to play in the tournament.

Edward Nuna winner of the 2010 Funston Memorial. Edward's 138 two day net total was good enough to win by one over Bud Davis and Darrell Squire.

George made a clutch putt on 17 and a sand save on 18 to overcome a 2 stroke deficit to send the championship into a two hole playoff with Darrell. George and Darrell both hit drives down the middle of the first playoff hole and both made great wedge shots to leave each other makable birdies but left the first playoff green with pars. The second playoff hole was number nine and both players hit good drives, again leaving a wedge into the green. George was in the rough and just managed to get his ball on the green while Darrel just 100 yards out had a bare lie and came up short with his wedge. George two putted and Darrell was unable to get up and down. It was an exciting finish to two good days of golf. Congratulations George.

Executive Message:

Due to some problems getting the spraying done this weekend, we will be Opening TOMORROW – May 22. Members should note that sometime within the next couple of weeks we will have to close the closure for a couple of days to get the spraying done. We will try and do the closure during the weekday and not on the weekend.

The spraying planned for the weekend had to be postponed, so the course will open tomorrow, May 22.

Members should note that the spraying does have to occur in the near future, so you can expect that the course will have to be closed for a few days in a couple weeks time. However, we will try to close the course for spraying during the weekdays if possible. As soon as we get the details we will let you know.

We are looking at Monday, May 24 Opening.

On Saturday we are hoping to have Living by Design complete the spraying for fungus on the greens. After the greens are sprayed, we need to stay off them until Monday. After that we should be good to go. We appreciate the members patience…but we should not need any temporary greens this year.

Bear Sighting at the Amaruk

Apparently the bear didn't know the course was closed. Wildlife has set out a bear trap on the driving range so be careful when picking up your golf balls ... though the trap is about 280 yards out so it applies only to a couple of our members ... but you may be out for a walk....

Work being done on the greens

As I type it is snowing ... and called for 15 cm so Friday opening looks doubtful ... work is being done at the course and the greens have been aerrated.

Question: Do I Get Relief from Aeration Holes on the Green?

Answer: Most golf courses, at least once a year, aerify their greens. Aerification, or aeration, is the process of punching small holes in the green; actually, small "cores" of turf and sod are cut and removed from the green (read more about aerification and its purposes here), which leaves holes.
It usually takes the green a couple weeks to heal following aerification. During those couple weeks - and especially in the several days immediately following aerification - the aeration holes are quite a nuisance. They can certainly affect a putt, especially if your ball happens to come to rest right on top of one.

But does that mean a golfer whose ball is affected by aeration holes is entitled to free relief?

The answer is a qualified no, with an exception possibly provided through a local rule.

A number of golfers took to the base to find some golf Saturday. The weather was good and there were six par three holes available. Hopefully, the weather will cooperate this week and we will get on the Amaruk this Friday ... (the match was square)

Members are reminded that on Saturday, April 24, there will be a cleanup at the golf course. This will begin at 10 AM (think of it as a tee time)

I know ... in the old days we were there as soon as the snow left but we have to obey the sign. The driving range on base is free of snow even for the long hitters so go and hit a few balls and be ready when the sign is taken down.

Mixed night golf came to a close for another year Saturday. Close to twenty golfers took part with a number of them sticking to the theme of outrageous dressed golfer. The weather cooperated and we saw a hole in one from Berkley scoring his on number 9 from the 100 yard marker. The day brought to an end a season of fine golf and great cuisine. Top point accumulator with help of many fine lady golfers was Jake.

The pass the ace finale was won by Mary defeating Clarence in the final hand.

Thanks go to Margie for her continued efforts with the night. Job well done Margie.

MIxed Night Canada Day

Canada Day activities this year included Mix Night at the Amaruk. The weather was great as was the golf and 'pass the ace' saw Jake put out with an ACE cut :-( ... leaving Juanita to put out Susanne for the win. Excellent salads and the men did the usual good job at the BBQ.

Don, a regular at Men's night watches as playing partner makes his fairway shot on number 2. The course is struggling this year but with weather cooperating and continued hard work by our greenskeeping crew it will return.

This year Amaruk will be represented at the NLGA Juniors by LR: Dylon Morris, Nikashantess Penashue, Eric Campbell, Johnathan Lawrence, Keely Bishop, Joshua Lawrence

The Junior tournament will be held at Grand Meadows Golf Club in Frenchman's Cove. Amaruk is pleased to welcome back Nikashantess who is the reigning NL amateur champ. Nikashantess shot a brilliant 71 in the final round. Good luck to all players.

Expo Labrador 09

Visitors participating in the Expo Labrador 09 were treated to a beautiful day to enjoy a round of golf at the Amaruk Golf Club. The refreshment cart also helped. Melissa spearheaded this group (seen here enjoying the chip in birdie on number 9 hole). The golf has become a must do event looked forward to every year by visitors and locals alike. Father's Day Golf

Rain didn't deter these fathers and sons from playing some golf together on Father's Day. The results of these matches were unknown at the time of posting but I'm pretty sure that the sons had an advantage. The course was busy with fathers taking advantage of their day. Dave sinks clutch putt after Debbie put him there with a great drive on number 6 hole ... unfortunately it was the hidden hole ... :-)

The weather cooperated with the mixed golfers showing them a spectacular evening. New golfers had no regrets about coming out and hopefully will be regulars. Lessons for a couple of the ladies were not wasted as we saw some great shots from Norma and Debbie. Our new New Zealand friend showed us that she is a player ... both 'golf' and 'chase the ace' (an exciting finish with Theresa losing to Juanita with an 'ace' cut ... ) The BBQ was a success with the 'cooks' doing a good job once again. The weather has warmed up a little and 19 golfers took advantage and showed up for an evening of golf and a BBQ followed by 'pass the ace' . Howard (shown here watching Juanita cook his steak ) made his return to mix golf and took up where he left off ... being a nuisance to Theresa. Howard is limited to the BBQ and cards as he suffered a 'sports injury' which will put him on the disabled list for a few weeks. (No change in Juanita's work load though, as she said he was a burden before the injury)

Mixed Night June 3

It was cold ... oops COLD! Golfers started arriving despite the weather thinking BBQ at least. Suzanne who recently broke her arm (sport's injury) shows up determined to play and BBQ (she played very well using her hybrid for all shots and putting ... making shots that brought the group to their feet ... ) Everybody was bundled up but it was agreed at the end of the evening that it is the best mixed golf we have seen so don't be surprised if in the heat of August you will see some of these golfers dressed for winter trying to recapure the play of June 3.

Opportunity for pictures was lost when the mixed photographer left his camera at home :-( ... a number of the golfers however were pleased.
